Launched in 1920, it is recognized as the world's first commercially available disposable sanitary napkin brand. Its origins trace back to World War I: Kimberly-Clark produced Cellucotton, a wood pulp-based material significantly more absorbent than traditional cotton, used in medical-military applications. In the post-war phase, the material was reinterpreted for women's well-being, giving rise to a range that would redefine menstrual hygiene in the 20th century. The name Kotex refers to the original cotton texture. Kotex is now distributed in over 100 countries and its range includes external pads of various sizes and absorbencies, panty liners, and internal tampons.
