In dogs: Use during flea and/or tick infestations, when a repellent (anti-engorgement) activity against sandflies and/or mosquitoes is also necessary. Fleas: treatment and prevention of flea infestations (Ctenocephalides felis). Fleas on dogs are killed within 24 hours of treatment. A single treatment has persistent efficacy against new adult flea infestations for four weeks. The product can be integrated into a treatment strategy for flea allergy dermatitis (FAD) when this condition has been previously diagnosed by a veterinarian. Ticks: a single application provides persistent acaricidal efficacy against tick infestations (Ixodes ricinus, Dermacentor reticulatus and Rhipicephalus sanguineus) for four weeks. If ticks are present at the time of application, they may not all be killed within 48 hours but within a week. Sandflies and mosquitoes: A single treatment exerts repellent (anti-engorgement) activity against sandflies (Phlebotomus perniciosus) and mosquitoes (Culex pipiens, Aedes a Egypti) for four weeks. PROPERTIES Fipronil is an insecticide and acaricide from the phenylpyrazole family. Fipronil and its metabolite fipronil sulfone act on ligand-activated chloride channels, especially channels activated by the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) but also desensitizing (D) and non-desensitizing (N) activated channels by glutamate (Glu, ligand-gated chloride channels specific for invertebrates). They therefore block the pre- and postsynaptic transfer of chloride ions across the cell membrane. This causes uncontrolled activity of the central nervous system and the death of insects or mites. Permethrin belongs to the family of type I pyrethroids with insecticidal, acaricide and repellent activity. Pyrethroids act on voltage-gated sodium channels in vertebrates and invertebrates. Called “open channel blockers”, they act on sodium channels, slowing down both their activation and inactivation, leading to a state of hyperexcitability and death of the parasite. The product has insecticidal and acaricide activity against fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) and ticks (Rhipicephalus spp, Dermacentor spp, Ixodes ricinus), as well as repellent activity (anti-engorgement) against sandflies (Phlebotomus perniciosus) and mosquitoes (Culex pipiens, Aedes aegizi). It has been experimentally demonstrated that, when applied to dogs at least two days before exposure to ticks, the product indirectly reduces the risk of transmission of Babesia canis canis by infected ticks (Dermacentor reticulatus) for up to 28 days after application. Therefore the risk of canine babesiosis is reduced in treated dogs.
