Oral-B is an American brand entirely dedicated to oral hygiene, born in 1950 in California from the vision of periodontist Robert W. Hutson. Hutson designed a toothbrush with soft, rounded nylon bristles — a concrete response to the damage that the rigid filaments in use at the time were causing to patients' gums. The brand name is a contraction of Oral Brush; the first product marketed, the Oral-B 60, was named after the number of tufts of bristles. Initially distributed through the dental network, the brand built a close relationship with the professional community in the dental sector from the very beginning. Acquired by the Gillette group in 1984 and later merged into Procter & Gamble in 2006, Oral-B has progressively expanded its range, developing — together with Braun — the oscillating-rotating head technology that has become its hallmark in the electric toothbrush market.
